Parish News for the 5th Week in Ordinary Time

February 1, 2024 by James Elston in Weekly News

This Sunday is Candlemas, also known as The Presentation of The Lord and The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast commemorates the presentation of the baby Jesus in the Temple which is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. It falls on February 2nd, which is the 40th and final day of the Christmas season, we transfer this Feast to Sunday. In the Gospel reading, we hear the old man Simeon declare the child Jesus to be the light of the world, which is why mass begins with the blessing of candles in the Parish Room and then we process into church to symbolise the entry of Jesus into the Temple.
